Upgrading your circuit breaker panel is an important project. It can improve the safety and capacity of your home’s electrical system. This guide outlines the key steps involved in a professional circuit breaker upgrade.

1. Permit Acquisition

Before any work begins, it is crucial to obtain the necessary permits from your local building department. This makes sure the upgrade follows all local electrical codes and rules. A qualified official will inspect the work.

2. Disconnecting Old Wires

The first step in the physical work involves safely disconnecting all existing wiring from the old circuit breaker panel. This must be done with the main power supply to the house completely shut off to prevent any electrical hazards. Each wire is carefully identified and labeled to ensure correct reconnection to the new panel.

3. Removing the Old Panel

Once all wires are disconnected, the old circuit breaker panel is carefully removed from its mounting. This may involve unfastening it from the wall and gently pulling it away from the electrical conduit.

4. Installing the New Panel and Connecting Wiring

The new, upgraded circuit breaker panel is then mounted in the designated location. Once the new panel is in place, the labeled wires are connected. Each wire goes to the correct terminal in the panel. This step requires precision to ensure each circuit is correctly wired.

5. Installing New Circuit Breakers

With the main wiring connected, the new circuit breakers are then installed into the new panel. Each breaker is made to protect a specific circuit in your home. It is securely placed in its slot.

6. Labeling and Organization

Accurate labeling is critical for future safety and convenience. Every circuit breaker is clearly labeled to indicate which areas or appliances in your home it controls. This lets you quickly find and turn off power to certain circuits when you need to do maintenance or in an emergency.

7. Testing the System

After the installation and labeling are complete, the entire new electrical system is rigorously tested. This means restoring power to the house. Then, we will test each circuit breaker and its circuits. This ensures everything works correctly and safely. An electrician will use specialized equipment to verify proper voltage, continuity, and grounding.
